How to understand implementation research

Our interactive EGPRN online workshop 'How to understand implementation research’ will take place on Tuesday 7th July 2026 at 17.00 BST / 18:00 CEST / 19.00 EEST & IDT & TRT

We are very excited that Heather Rogers, Harm van Marwijk and Hilde Bastiaens will join us to run the workshop. As well as being inspiring teachers, they are experts in implementation research - we are lucky to have them as EGPRN colleagues.

Implementation research is the study of how to promote the uptake, integration, and sustained use of evidence-based interventions, policies, programmes or practices in real-world settings.
Rather than asking 'Does this intervention work?', implementation research asks questions like:

  • How can this intervention be implemented effectively?
  • What facilitators and barriers affect implementation?
  • How can adoption (Is it taken up by users?), fidelity (Is it delivered as intended?), reach (How widely is it used?), and sustainability (Can it be maintained over time?) be improved?
  • Why does implementation succeed in some settings but not others?
  • What works for whom, under what circumstances, and why?

By the end of this 100-minute workshop, through brief presentations, large group discussions and small group work in breakout rooms, you will be able to:

  1. Define implementation research and understand how it compares with other types of research.
  2. Understand why primary care researchers might choose to do implementation research, and explain the strengths and limitations of these studies.
  3. Review a paper that uses implementation research methods, emphasising the relationship between objectives, methods, and the measures used to evaluate them.

As with all our teaching, this will be an interactive workshop, not a lecture.

If you register, we will send you some pre-workshop reading about a week before the workshop.

The workshop is free for EGPRN members.

We highly encourage becoming a member as membership comes with many benefits besides free attendance to this workshop.

We would love to see you at the workshop. If you want to join, please click here to register. Please login with your EGPRN account to register.
